yoga & holistic

Adam Luker began his fitness studies as an undergraduate at the University of Southern Maine where he was a Martial Arts and Women’s Self-Defense Instructor. Most recently while completing his post-graduate education at the Royal Academy in Sweden, Adam was a fitness consultant at Stockholm’s prestigious Lappkärrberget Gymet.

Helping hundreds of people as a sought-after personal trainer and Ashtanga yoga instructor, Adam also holds specialized certifications through the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association in Core Conditioning, Functional Training, Biomechanics and Performance Enhancement through Periodization—an advanced training system commonly employed by Olympic Athletes.

“My approach combines the ancient wisdom of yoga and martial arts with the modern science of kinesiology and physiology. I explore one’s biomechanical limitations through the surveying of ‘kinetic chain’ efficiency (human movement), which provides me with insight by revealing areas of weakness, tightness, overuse, underuse and stress, all of which will ultimately result in an energy leak.”

Energy leaks will inevitably hinder progress regarding anything athletic, including musical performance. For the musician, the long term result is often a performance related injury such as carpal-tunnel, arthritis, dystonia, and repetitive use syndrome (such as tennis elbow). Additionally, more immediate problems may arise with breath support, embouchure control and glottal interference. When the body encounters even one of these interferences, the result is an unconscious compensation—an energy leak.

While striving for ‘maximum efficiency with minimum effort,’ energy leaks not only hinder musical performance, but may also slow the development of technical proficiency for the beginner & intermediate, or cause plateaus and pain for the advanced performer.

Correcting an energy leak therefore becomes essential for the serious musician & athlete in order to insure a career of pain-free performance longevity.

“I have found that this is the root cause of every limitation an individual encounters, both physical and physiological. My holistic approach identifies the specific cause of an existing or potential performance related problem or injury, eliminates perceived barriers, and allows the musician to focus on art—not the physical aspects involved with playing an instrument—thereby allowing the true potential to be revealed.”

“Adam’s ability to connect with an individual during a yoga session is amazing...his instruction helps you achieve what you think is unachievable...”
